Planes, Trains & Automobiles: Emu gains funding from Innovate UK's Sustainable Innovation Fund

Emu Analytics are proud to announce that, in Autumn 2020, we were selected as one of the recipients of Innovate UK’ Sustainable Innovation Fund to develop our project Planes, Trains (and Automobiles!). Alongside our project partners Plane Finder and Ferrovial, the 9 month project will focus on improving the management of multi-modal passenger flows across two highly impacted transport sectors disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic as part of the agenda to build the UK back better and more sustainably.

Build Back the UK with Innovate UK’s Sustainable Innovation Fund

Data-driven approaches have played an important part in understanding and mitigating the impacts of Covid-19. They also serve in developing a broader and sustainable solution to refining our travel networks and to address climate change. Innovate UK has launched the Sustainable Innovation Fund to invest £10 million to invite single and collaborative research and development projects to create opportunities for companies and organisations to put forward their ideas and technologies.

Bring Flo.w into Multi-Modal Transport and Make Journeys Safer and Sustainable

Joined by data provider Plane Finder, Emu Analytics proposed an adaption of our software Flo.w as a solution to manage potential crowding across transport networks. Due to delays and similar disruptions travelling with trains to airports poses a particular risk of passenger bottlenecks, congestion and waiting times where infections are likely to occur.

Emu software Flo.w brings together real-time data from different transport providers such as Network Rail and passenger aircraft movement to understand a multi-modal journey as a continuously changing system. Emu’s analytics and data visualisation alerts airlines about delays and potential disruptions so they can inform their customers to recommend adjustment across their journey. Flo.w provides a vital tool to support and maintain social distancing requirement whilst equally enabling a smooth trip for travellers, restoring public confidence in safe airline journeys and promoting sustainable transport (such as rail services) to get to the airport.

Plane Finder is a world leading data provider of real-time aircraft movement and positions, which it collects, processes and shares with airports, airlines and millions of aviation enthusiasts via its market leading mobile apps and websites. Ferrovial, a global infrastructure mobility services group, will be a another (non funded) partner in this project. Known as the major shareholder of AGS Airports and Heathrow Airport, Ferrovial will trial our solution by offering the necessary infrastructure at Heathrow Airport.

Moving forward with Flo.w

This crisis has proven how vital but also cost and time-effective it is to understand our transport networks in detail. This project has great potential to expand this lesson beyond planes and trains to automobiles including transport providers such as shuttle buses, coach companies and more. Through an interconnected analytics solution it would ensure that our travel systems wouldn’t only run more smoothly and customer friendly but it also invites to travel in more environmentally sustainable ways.
