The team at Strava have just updated and released their Global Heatmap. This heatmap, updated from 2015, shows 1 billion + Strava activities recorded through their GPS app, including cycling and running.
Whilst the data looks amazing, thanks to its use of Mapbox GL and some clever cartography (find out how they did it here), it only hints at the full insights that can be gained from it.
We have worked with Strava Metro (the title given to their data arm) for the last couple of years analysing and combining Strava data with numerous other sources such as traffic accidents, weather, terrain and live train time feeds. Our clients, which have included city transport providers and property developers, have been interested in understanding a wide-range of use cases from road safety and transport management to cycle-adoption and health & wellbeing.
